Adulteration is the new epidemic, the usage of chemicals, pesticides and additives are often overseen for monetary gain but the long term affects are hazardous.
Spice powders are part of our daily life, with the market being so price sensitive and competition reaching it’s peak adulteration has become a common practice. Themost common added impurities are food colors, starch, brick powder, coloredsawdust and soapstone.
Checkout most common spice powder which are adulterated:
1. Chilli powder
Put a tsp of red chilli powder in water
Pure redchilli powder does not dissolve in water. This is, infact the best way to check for adulterants. If you find a white residue at the bottom which has a smooth feel, it could indicate the presence of soap stone.
Adulterant in turmeric powder, lead chromate provide a bright yellow colorand they are insoluble in water.
We believe that to remove the poison of vegetables or fruits it should be immersed in turmeric water, but turmeric powder in market itself is harmful with lead chromate.
To identify the presence of lead chromate, mix a spoon of turmeric powder with water. If adulterated it will leak streaks of water soluble colors.
The demand for spices has increased with the increasing population and exports has paved way adulteration to meet the demand. You can simply put the spice powders in water, pure spices will always settle or float and the impure ones will leave streaks
